CAAP confident airline industry will pass safety audits

The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) is confident
the local aviation industry will pass the safety audits that several
international agencies will implement within the year.

Representatives of the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and the
International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) are visiting the
Philippines to assess the country's progress in meeting global
aviation safety standards.

Findings made by experts from EASA will determine if the ban
preventing local carriers from entering European airspace will be
lifted.

Last March, the EU barred Philippine carriers from mounting flights to
the 27-country bloc because of CAAP's failure to address safety issues
raised by its peer body in the US, the Federal Aviation
Administration.

ICAO, for its part, also found gaps in CAAP's regulation, prompting it
to classify the Philippines as among countries with significant
security risks.

CAAP director-general Alfonso Cusi said the agency is "ready" for the
planned safety audits as it already implemented several corrective
actions.

EASA will be in the country this month, while ICAO will be coming in
by December.
